Sex work and sex workers are two of the debated topics. The stance of the people varies according to the perspectives. There are no second thoughts on the fact that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and people have a different understanding of sex work. In this article, we will see in detail the understanding of sex work in an open society.

Why sex workers and not prostitutes?

The first thing that people need to understand is that sex work is also work. Identifying them as prostitutes is more like degrading them. It is a term that relates more to criminality and immorality. More than anything, the people who offer sexual services prefer to be called sex workers, and they hate being called prostitutes. The discrimination of sex workers actually starts from this point, which is referring to them as prostitutes.

Why people get into sex work?

This is one of the first questions that need to be answered. It is so important because people have weird and baseless definitions of why people get into this work. The unknown truth why people actually provide sexual services is to earn their livelihood, and they got into this because, for most of them, the situation demanded and pushed them to do it. They are very few people who get into this work willingly. Even if there are various other options to work, there is no other work that will generate this much income. The work is also flexible, and hence, some prefer to get into it.

Why is it not a crime?

not a crime

If a question against it needs to be raised, it would be why it should be a crime?  People can keep arguing whether it is moral or immoral. The debate will keep going on and on, and there will be no end to it. It is because it is all about the opinions that people have, and people have different ways of approaching things. If you put a little bit of thought into it, you will understand that it might be against the morals of some set of people, but it is not a criminal act. It is not affecting any person in any way. Hence there is no way that sex work can be classified as a criminal act.

What is wrong with the laws?

The law against sex workers and their clients criminalize and punishes both. At the end of the day, it is a service that is being offered by certain people, and it is being bought by certain clients. The entire process is more like any other business. So it is very evident that the laws in the countries that have banned or criminalized sex work are totally wrong. It affects the lives of people and has a lot of negative impacts on various aspects.
